This one-day course will cover the basics of wetland plant identification in the Piedmont. Some of the most commonly encountered wetland plants will be identified in the field, including various species of trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants, grasses, sedges and rushes. The course will also cover the use of plant identification keys for hard-to-identify plants, and cover concepts such as the Wetland Plant Indicator Status of various species, morphological adaptations of wetland plants, and characteristics of the wetland-upland community interface.
This class will be team taught with several instructors to ensure that each student receives individual attention. No prerequisites are required However, it would be helpful if you have some field guides. A copy of "Common Wetland Plants of North Carolina" will be provided along with several other keys and texts.
This class will be taught entirely in the field. Please come prepared for the weather.
